I spotted a small booth displaying a set of neat wire cutting tools that can be of great value to modelers. The Classic Cutter from BB Tools, Inc. as seen in Photo 2, cuts music wire, piano wire, and even braided steel wire cleanly and easily. How many times have you tried to cut a length of braided throttlecable or pull-pull cable, only to find that your tool won't cut it at all, or it winds up frayed with several strands left uncut? The Classic Cutter eliminates fraying, and the tool remains sharp cut after cut. I saw it demonstrated! Trying to cut a 1/8" music wire with a pair of regular wire cutters? It ruins the cutting edge dosen't it. Well put those cutters away and reach for the Classic Cutter to achieve excellent results.

Jaws of Steel!

This is a tool you probably don't know you need until you really need it! The BB Tools Inc, Classic Cutter is specifically designed for cutting stranded cable cleanly. leaving no frayed ends. The tool will cut safety/lock wire as well as piano wire. It is manufactured from aircraft-quality alloy steel.
To ensure long life of the cutting edge, the tools go through a complex heat-treating process that gives them a file-hard surface with a tough core. Unlike most cutting tools, the Classic Cutter is zinc-plated with a gold iridite finish for rust protection. A unique handle design is incorporated for adding leverage with thick T-shaped vinyl grips for cutting ease. It looks pretty good too!
The Classic Cutter performed as advertised, giving clean, burr-free cuts on music wire and exceptionally clean cuts on braided cable. This is usually a problem area, even for sharp diagonal cutters, so the Classic Cutter is well worth its asking price just for those occasions when you need a perfect end on a cable. Wire Cutters-
A package arrived the other day, that contained a new modeling tool well worth your undivided attention. We all have cut push-rods, threaded cables, etc. while installing hardware on our planes. To get a clean cut, many of use a Dremel tool with an abrasive cutting wheel. This works well most of the time, but there are some situations where it's impossible to safely cut a wire that way. Owners of Hangar 9's P-51 Mustang know what I mean! That model's retractable wheel actuator rods were tough cookies to cut!
So what shows up just a week too late to solve that very problem? None, other than the niftiest wire cutters I've ever seen, The Classic Cutter! Photo 5 shows the latest and greatest item from BBTools, Inc. This little gem has made easy work of cutting pushrods, spring steel, and stranded wire as well. The Classic Cutter comes in two sizes. PN-001 will cut wire up to 3/32" thick, and PN-003 will cut up to 3/16", and either one sells for under $20.
To test these cutters I turned to my collection of wires of all kinds and sizes, accumulated of many years of model building. My wife was having so much fun cutting wires, I had to hide a few very new 48" wires to keep them from becoming mini-length wires! She doesn't have the strongest hands, so we were both surprised at how easy it was for her to cut even 1/8" music wire. They're good!

...Speaking of tools, George Schaffner sent me one of his new "Classic Cutters" to evaluate. This is a shear-action wire cutter, made in the USA, and costs under $20.
This tool is capable of making clean, non-distorted cuts in stranded cable up to "garage door lifting cable" sizes.
The "002" unit can also cut "hobby shop steel wire" -- K&S for example -- up to 3/16" diameter, and genuine music wire (not often seen in today's hobby shops) up to 3/32".
The difference between the Classic Cutter and other types of wire-cutting hand tools is that the CC uses a true shearing action, with hardened cutting jaws shaped to "surround" the wire being cut.
As most of us know from experience, cutting stranded cable -- such as for throttle actuation -- with a pair of "dikes" produces a flattened and flared-out end. The Classic Cutter doesn't do that. The freshly-CC-cut end of an R/C flexible push-pull cable enters neatly into the socket of a threaded brass "solder fitting". No re-shaping or filing off sharp points is needed. [JW]
